ABOUT

I have been active in education for more than 20 years as a teacher, instructional coach, workshop presenter, and designer of mathematics programs at the K-12 level.  I completed a master's degree in mathematics education at Fresno Pacific University and am currently a Ph.D. candidate at Michigan State University. I have a passion for mathematics education and facilitate 10 online professional development courses focused on mathematics teaching and learning. My courses deal with issues that any teacher of mathematics has experienced. How do I best assess my students? How can I get students to talk about math, and how do I facilitate that discussion? How do I get out of the textbook and into an engaging task that requires students to reason and come up with a solution strategy? These are all questions that we consider in the courses and work through together as an online community.
My research focuses on mathematics teaching and learning, with an emphasis on the design and investigation of teaching and learning interactions in schools. I am particularly interested in the factors that support teacher learning and enactment of innovative teaching practices in P-12 mathematics education. My research aims to help mathematics teachers develop a reflective, inventive practice that centers on the cultivation of meaning-making opportunities inside and outside the classroom.

My recent projects in early childhood mathematics education study how teachers can respond to children’s natural activity in play to support the development of mathematical thinking. Through interactions with teachers in communities of pedagogical discourse, we explore learning environments, materials, and pedagogical orientations that support children’s understanding of mathematical concepts.
